An Ayurvedic Perspective: The Warming Benefits of A2 Ghee for a Balanced Body and Mind this Winter

Summary:

Ghee has been a part of traditional Indian cooking for generations. During winter, it adds richness to comforting meals such as dal, khichdi, rotis and traditional sweets. Explore how Ayurveda views ghee, how Bilona Ghee is prepared, and how to include it in a balanced winter diet.

Key Highlights:

  • Ayurveda traditionally values ghee as a nourishing ingredient in everyday meals.

  • Desi Cow Ghee can add flavour and richness to winter comfort foods.

  • The traditional Bilona method involves curdling milk, churning the curd into butter, and heating the butter to prepare ghee.

  • Ghee is calorie-dense, so portion size matters as part of a balanced diet.

  • Proper storage helps maintain its quality, aroma and flavour.

As the winter chill settles across the landscape, our bodies undergo a subtle yet profound shift. According to Ayurveda, winter is the season of Vata - a period characterised by cold, dryness, and a tendency toward restlessness. To stay grounded and healthy, our internal systems require warmth, lubrication, and "Snehana" (oleation). This is where the golden elixir of Desi Cow Ghee becomes more than just a kitchen staple; it becomes a powerful medicine for the body and mind.

Stoking the Digestive Fire (Agni):

In the colder months, our digestive fire, or Jatharagni, often becomes stronger to help the body generate heat. However, if not properly fueled, this fire can lead to internal dryness or "Aam" (toxins). Desi Cow Ghee acts as the perfect fuel. Unlike heavy oils that can dampen your metabolism, a dollop of ghee enhances digestion without aggravating Pitta. It helps in the assimilation of nutrients, ensuring that the warm, hearty winter meals you consume actually nourish your tissues.

The Traditional Bilona Method: From Curd to Ghee

Not all ghee is created equal. Ayurveda emphasises the importance of the Traditional Bilona Method. Most commercial brands produce ghee by spinning cream at high speeds, which strips the fat of its medicinal properties. In contrast, Bilona Ghee is made by curdling whole A2 Milk, then hand-churning the curd to obtain butter, which is finally simmered over a slow flame.

The process generally involves three main stages:

  • Milk is converted into curd: Milk is first cultured and allowed to set into curd. This step forms the starting point of the traditional preparation method.

  • The curd is churned to obtain butter: The curd is churned to separate butter from the remaining liquid. This is the defining stage of the traditional Bilona process.

  • The butter is heated to prepare ghee: The butter is heated carefully until the moisture evaporates and the milk solids separate. The resulting ghee is filtered and stored appropriately.

The Bilona method is valued for its traditional preparation process and the craftsmanship involved. However, the method alone does not establish that a ghee product is nutritionally superior to every other variety. The milk source, preparation practices, handling, and storage also matter when assessing product quality.

At Mr. Milk, our Bilona Ghee is prepared using this traditional curd-to-butter approach. It brings a familiar Indian dairy preparation method to everyday cooking.

Warming the Mind & Lubricating the Soul:

Winter dryness isn’t just skin-deep; it can affect our joints and even our mental clarity. In Ayurveda, Desi Ghee is considered a Medhya Rasayana - a brain tonic. Consuming it daily helps lubricate the joints, preventing the creakiness often felt in cold weather, while also nourishing the nervous system to combat seasonal anxiety.

For an extra winter boost, many Ayurvedic practitioners recommend Nasya: applying two drops of warm Desi Cow Ghee in each nostril every morning. This creates a protective barrier against cold winds and viruses while keeping your nasal passages hydrated.

Why Desi Cow Ghee Belongs in Your Winter Diet?

Desi Cow Ghee has long been a part of traditional Indian cooking, adding richness and flavour to comforting winter meals. From warm dal and khichdi to freshly made rotis, a moderate amount can make everyday food more satisfying. Ayurveda traditionally values ghee for its nourishing qualities, but it should be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet rather than as a remedy for winter infections or low immunity.

At Mr. Milk, our Bilona Ghee is prepared using a traditional process of curdling milk, churning the curd into butter, and slowly heating the butter to make ghee.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

Q.1: Does A2 Ghee increase bad cholesterol during winter?
A: Quite the opposite. Ayurveda and modern science both suggest that A2 Ghee contains healthy fats (Omega-3s) that can help improve heart health and provide a steady source of energy when consumed in moderation.
Q.2: Why is Bilona Ghee more expensive than regular store-bought ghee?
A: The Traditional Bilona Method is labour-intensive and requires about 25–30 litres of A2 Milk to produce just 1 kg of ghee. This concentration of nutrients and purity is what makes it the best Desi Cow Ghee in India.
Q.3: Can I use Gir Cow Ghee for a massage in winter?
A: Yes! Desi Cow Ghee is an excellent natural moisturiser. Massaging it into the soles of your feet (Padabhyanga) before bed can improve sleep quality and keep your body warm throughout the night.
Q.4: Is A2 Ghee suitable for people who are lactose intolerant?
A: Yes. During the clarification process, milk solids (lactose and casein) are removed, leaving behind pure butterfat. Most people with dairy sensitivities find A2 Ghee very easy to tolerate.
Q.5: How should I store Mr. Milk A2 Ghee during the cold months?
A: Ghee is shelf-stable and does not need refrigeration. In winter, it will naturally solidify. Store it in a cool, dry place in a glass jar, and always use a clean, dry spoon to maintain its purity.
